Introduction: Bhava is very basic to Vedic Astrology, it is one of the very fundamental lessons taught to students, in my course on the basics of astrology named “Jyotish-Prarambha” I taught this to students [it was very natural]; but my teaching was different [obviously]; I taught Bhava significations keeping in mind different views given by different sages and also cleared some very fundamental doubts, such as “Bhava chart have to be used or not?” “Rashi and Bhava are different or not”, This class is a supplement to the video [given to student’s] which deals with the topic extensively in detail and can also be read separately, hence due to this reason, it is being presented as a separate public article for ease of everyone.

Different approach of classics: I will divide classics into two groups, one is the work of sages lost over time and now reconstructed with no authenticity such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra etc. another is works of Acharya’s which is authentic with the availability of manuscripts when you read Acharya’s carefully you will find a pattern.

Though treatises on astrology well-written by talented men are to be found in plenty [according to me and scholars here Varahamihira is talking about works of sages which was available in plenty at his time, there were 18 sages who are considered reformers of astrology and there were many other sages who have written on astrology, so plenty of texts were available], I begin this small boat [writing Brihat Jataka] of a scientific work of various metres and manifold meaning for the benefit of such of those as have failed in their endeavours to cross the vast ocean of astrology (Brihat Jataka by Varaha Mihira Chapter one Shloka two) [Translation by Panditabhusana V. Subrahmanya Sastri]

Varaha Mihira in his Hora Shastra [Brihat Jataka] stated briefly the essence of the teachings of the learned sages, viz ten divisions of the zodiacal signs, Raj Yoga’s, longevity, effects of planetary periods etc. This could not be done elaborately by him and hence I [Kalyan Varma] am conveying in this work such useful essence as culled out from Yavana’s etc. rejecting other unuseful portions, which may be appended to the said Brihat Jataka (Kalyan Varma in Saravali, Chapter one Shloka two three and four) [Translated by R. Santhanam]

Having bowed to the Sun, the lord of day, who is of the nature of Vishnu, the beloved of the goddess Sri, Brahman and Shiva, who is the sovereign of the hosts of immortal lights, who transcends Maya and who rules all animate worlds I am going to expound Jataka Parijata to the joy of all astrologers epitomising the starry influence  treated of by Garga, Parashara and others [1]
Prostrating myself at the lotus feet of the lord of Raghu’s which the bard community have to salute, I prepare the work of Jatakaparijata abridging the important scientific work Saravali.

My advice to students is very simple, take classics with a pinch of salt. Remember that classics were lost and what is available to use now is a re-written version [we know the condition of intellect in Kaliyuga], Thus don’t depend blindly on classics. Always remember that Varahamihira has written his text after reading all classics carefully in a concise manner and then after him, other astrologers have written other treatises completing the remaining portions. Like Mihira haven’t dealt with Rashi of planets which seems to be an important part, hence it was written in Saravali. None of Saravali or Brihat Jataka deals with effects of each and every Bhava in detail hence it was done by Jataka Parijata. Having this realisation in mind, it is always better to try reconstructing classics based on one’s own understanding of five prime classics of Vedic Astrology [1], then one must also try to understand the amount of importance given by sages to different topics [for example the effects of Moon in Nakshatra is given only in Nashta Jataka/Lost Horoscopy chapter and isn’t dealt in basics of science dealt in first two chapters of any classic] [2], when there is a contradiction try to follow the classic which is more authentic [There is difference in Ashtakavarga calculations given in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Brihat Jataka, keeping the fact in mind that now available Brihat Parashara is a later day compilation it is always better to follow Brihat Jataka calculations for Ashtakavarga, and I have personally observed that all astrologers who are proficient in Ashtakavarga use the calculations given in Brihat Jataka only] [3].

Significations of houses [short, explained and eloborated]

Two types of classics: If you read classics carefully you will find two types of classics, the ones who deal with Bhava significations in a concise manner such as Brihat Jataka, Saravali and Horasara and others are those who deal with Bhava significations in detail such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Jataka Parijata. According to my understanding of Vedic Jyotish, Bhava means emotion [Meaning of Bhava in Hindi]; this is to say that different houses of a horoscope indicate different emotions one passes through, these emotions can be internal in term of longing or external in terms of desires. This means that the first house is the desire for one’s own self, the second house is the desire to have a family and so on, these desires will be fulfilled or not and if fulfilled then in which way is to be seen from other influences on a house which is the sign falling in a Bhava and placement/aspects of planets etc.

The first type of classics who teaches us significations of Bhava in a concise manner wants to develop our understanding for that emotion, whereas other types of classics, written in later times found that people are not able to completely understand it the way sages wanted it to be understood hence they wrote detailed significations of a Bhava so that if one is not able to understand then it is better to remember, however, my advice to students is to understand the emotion of a Bhava rather than memorising it’s significations, understanding the emotion also helps one develop new significations of a Bhava [which is need of the hour nowadays].

रिःफाख्यमित्युपचयान्यरिकर्मलाभदुश्चिक्यसंज्ञितगृहाणि न नित्यमेकेII१५II

The several houses from Lagna [ascendant] onwards are respectively termed (1) Tanu, (2) Kutumba, (3) Sahottha, (4) Bandhu, (5) Putra, (6) Ari, (7) Pathni, (8) Marana, (9) Subha, (10) Aspada, (11) Aya and (12) Rippha. The 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses are called Upachaya but not so according to some. [Brihat Jataka 1.15]
Tanu means self which is indicated by the first house, Kutumba means family indicated by the second house, Sahottha means one born from the same womb/siblings indicated by the third house, Bandhu means brother literally but here it means very close ones which is indicated by the fourth house [it is like we call our best friends are brothers, here Bandhu is in that sense – This clears one confusion, many people take 5th house to indicate love relationships, I have always been opposing this fact because of a simple fact that Son and Lover is not the same emotion, a house indicating divine things such as Mantra can’t signify a low instinct such as sexual desires, here Varaha gives us a hint that all these love relationships and live-in relationships are to be seen from 4th house only, this Shloks is the testimony to my statement, I will soon present an article on love relationships and it’s indications from horoscope], Putra means son indicated by the fifth house, Ari means enemy indicated by the sixth house, Pathni means wife indicated by the seventh house, Marana means death indicated by the eighth house, Subha means auspicious indicated by the ninth house, Aspada means Position indicated by the tenth house, Aya means income indicated by the eleventh house and Rippha means loss indicated by the twelfth house. [For now, let we leave Upachaya house, we will learn about them in the next section of the article].

Trying to understand this one word’s related to each Bhava we get to know that the first house indicates the notion of self [this knowledge is very crucial because Bhava significations remain the same in every divisional chart, this is to say that every divisional chart ascendant indicates one’s own self, for example ascendant in D9/Navansha indicates one’s nature and behaviours in his marital life, ascendant in D10/Dashamsa indicates one’s nature and behaviour in his professional life and so forth]. the second house indicates the notion of family, in a larger sense the notion of वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम [the whole world is a family], it is all those whom one considers as a family for example in D10 it is the professional team, in D24 it is closest batchmates etc. The third house indicates the notion of one’s sibling, born from/coming of the same background. the fourth house indicates the notion of close ones it is different from the notion of family [where a large number of people are involved] and the notion of someone coming from the same backgroud], it is the one who gives comfort to the native, the one with whom the native is in most comfortable state of mind. the fifth house governs the notion of product, something which is given birth by the native it is ones own production/creation. the sixth house indicates the notion of enmity, anything which the natives consider as his enemy or anything in opposition to the native is to be seen from the sixth house. the seventh house indication the notion of partnership/companionship, it indicates the state of mind where one feels that he is not completely able to carry out something on his own and seeks to refuse in someone else or needs anyone’s help. the eight house indicates the emotion of death/discontinuity/termination. the ninth house indicates whatever is auspicious/benevolent.  the tenth house indicates the notion of prestige self-esteem esteem. the eleventh house indicates the notion of gains/profits whereas the twelfth house indicates the notion of loss/expenditure etc.

Based on these different notions significations of different houses changes as per different divisional charts, there is no fixed pattern in this, it changes for example when it comes to the fifth house in D1 it indicates one’s stomach, in D2 it indicates one’s earnings from his profession [thats why sages have included the fifth house in Dhana houses because product of one’s professional life is his income], In D3 it indicates progeny of one’s siblings, In D4 it indicates one’s ability to make things out of his fortune, [D4 indicates fortune, it is like one is born without any ancestral property and also doesn’t possess a job which promises much wealth etc. but still manages to have a decent home and car then it is the blessing of 4th house of D4], the fifth house in D7 indicates one’s progeny, In D9 it indicates one’s progeny [that’s why the fifth house is elaborately dealt with respect to Navansha], In D10 it indicates one’s professional achivements [like for me it will be my articles and researches], In D12 it indicates native and his siblings, In D16 it indicates one’s fortune earned through his home or car or other things [it is like renting ones home or car and earning money out of it], In D20 it indicates one’s spiritual childerns [If native gives mantra to someone, then those people are indicated by this house], In D24 it indicates one’s students [prominent in charts of teachers], In D27 it indicates one’s fears and phobias, In D30 it indicates one’s wrong deeds and wrong doings etc. Like this every house needs to be understood, this approach gives us a predictive technique which never fails for example in horoscope of teachers there must be two things (1) Teaching as a profession must be indicted in D9 and D10 and (2) their 5th house/lord of D24 have to be prominently placed.

The following twelve names are also applied to denote the twelve houses respectively from the ascendant (1) Kalpa, (2) Swa, (3) Vikrama, (4) Griha, (5) Pratibha, (6) Kshata, (7) Chittottha, (8) Randhra, (9) Guru, (10) Mana, (11) Bhava and (12) Vyaya. The 4th and the 8th are designated Chaturastra houses, the 7th is called Dhyuna (Gambling) and the 10th house is known as Agya [order]. [Brihat Jataka 1.16]
Now Varahamihira adds some more basic significations of houses from ascendant, these two significations stated in Shloka 1.15 and 1.16 indicates basic [condesed] significations of twelve houses understanding them will give a basic understanding of the theme of twelve houses and according to me, nothing more is left to be understood learnt, after learning this basic theme of a house.
Kalpa means 4,32,00,00,000 years which is one day of Brahma [here it means creation], Swa means self which here mean the ones with whom one identifies himself, Vikrama means valour, Griha means home, Pratibha means talent, Kshata means wounds, Chittottha means something which attains focus of mind, Randhra means hole, Guru means preceptor/teacher, Mana means reputation, Bhava means world/birth [here Maya] and Vyaya means loss/expenditure. These houses are also to be understood in the same manner which was done for the previous Shloka.

Reading these two Shloka’s together we come to know that Ascendant indicates body [Tanu] and power/strength [Shakti], the second house indicates wealth [Artha and Dhana both means wealth, they are different in a sense that Artha means money/assets acquired using Dharmic Path whereas Dhana can include both Dharmic and Adharmic money], the third house indicates Sahaja [Brothers] and Parakrama [Valour], the fourth house indicates Bandhava [loved ones – that’s why I take 4th house to indicate love relationships and live-in relationships] and Griha [Home], the fifth house indicates Putra [Childern] and Prathiba [Talent], the sixth house indicates Ari [Enemy] and Vran [Ulcer], the seventh house indicates Stri [women] and Kama [sexual desires], the eighth house indicates Vinasa [destruction] and Dehavivara [description of body], the ninth house indicates Punya [good deeds of past lives] and Guru [preceptor/teacher], the tenth house indicates Karma [work] and Maana [respect in soceity], the eleventh house indicates Aya [income] and Bhava [illusions that keeps us attached to this world] and the twelfth house indicates Vyaya [expenditure] [Saravali, Chapter 3]

Ripha [enemy], Vyaya [expenditure], Dwadasaka [12th] and Antayabha [last house] are the different names of the twelfth house.

Till now we have learned about what these different houses signify, here one can notice that Brihat Jataka and Saravali gives only two significations per house, which I have told as concise significations of houses whereas Jataka Parijata gives us detailed significations of houses. According to my understanding of Jyotish, houses are to be understood according to their concise significations, this helps us to understand the Bhava in detail and this way we will also understand the hidden motivation of the Bhava.
As I have been telling since long that “Bhava indicates emotions, Rashi indicates condition and Planets indicates living beings” we have to understand the emotion of the Bhava deeply using these different significations.
To help us in the process [of understanding the Bhava’s deeply] sages have given special names to Bhava’s and also named some Bhava’s together to make us understand the principle [the basic emotion of a Bhava].

The seventh, rising [ascendant], fourth and tenth [mind the order] are called Kantakas, Kendras or Chatustaya’s. The insect, human, aquatic and bestial signs become strong when they occupy the 7th, 1st, 4th and 10th house respectively.

The houses next to the angles are known as the Panaphara’s or succedent houses. The houses next to the Succedent houses are termed as the Aapoklima’s or Cadent houses. The fourth house is known as Hibukam, Ambu, Sukham and Veshma. The seventh house is known as Jamitram; the fifth house is called Trikonam, and the tenth house is known as Mesurana and Karma.

The fourth and the eighth are called as Chaturasra houses. The 9th is known as Tapa. The fourth has names like Sukha, Jala, Patala, Bandhu and Hibuka. The other name given to the tenth house is Karma, Agna, Gagana and Meshurana. The 5th and 9th are trines. The 5th is the only house connected with Dhi while the 9th house is Tritrikona. The 7th house is called Dyuna, Astha, Jaaya and Jamitra. The 6th is Shatkona; the 3rd is Duschikya and the 12th Rippha. The 2nd house is Kutumba.

The adjoining houses with reference to angles are Panaphara. The houses next to Panpharas are Apoklima houses. The planet in angles gives effects in one’s boyhood. The effect of planets in Panphara’s are felt in the middle age while the planets in Aapoklima give the result at the conclusion of the native’s life.

The 6th, 10th, 11th and 3rd [again mind order] are called Upachaya houses while remaining houses [1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 12th] are Anupachaya houses.

Explanations about special names of houses

Some scholars are of the opinion that there are three types of names given to houses, one that indicates their position such as Trikona which means trine, if you draw a line from one trikona to another trikona you will find that a big triangle will be drawn which will cover the whole birth horoscope, another type of names are those which indicates different attributes of houses such as Dhana is a name used for 2nd house which means wealth indicating wealth as an attribute of 2nd house, third and last kind of names according to some scholars are the Arabic/Greece name of Rashi’s /Bhava’s used in the text only for reference and composing Shloka’s and which means nothing.

However, according to me, each and every name which was given to a house either it is Sanskrit or so-called Arabic was given for a reason, to believe that some houses forming an image of a triangle by their mutual distance doesn’t mean anything is belittling this divine science. owing to the fact that we don’t find any Arabic or Greece dictionary dealing with these names or dealing with any name [very few ancient languages have a dictionary, most of the ancient language don’t have dictionaries which indicate two things. either the language was limited to very few people, for example, tribal languages are known by tribal people but no record is kept because the language is not vast enough, it is limited to only a few words of their day to day life hence no need to preserve changes of language in form of dictionary (here dictionary means all changes in languages, new words, their meanings and rules of composition and grammar) or the language is a warped form of some other language so there is no need to have a special dictionary, for example, in Odia language the alphabet Va (व) is missing and it is replaced by Ba (ब) whenever needed, so they pronounce Bishnu (बिष्णु) instead of Vishnu (विष्णु), same is the case with Aum (ॐ) in Bangla, In Hindi/Devanagari/Sanskrit Aum (ॐ), is written like this (ॐ) whereas in Bangla Aum (उँँ) is written like this, one can notice that the tail of om which is prominent in Sanskrit is missing in Bangla. In these situations, we find no dictionaries because meaning is same only the pronunciation and writing is different due to many conditions [I will write about it sometimes later]]. According to me all these so-called Arabic/Greece names used by scholars such as Varahamihira and Kalyan Verma and later mistakenly planted into Brihat Parashara by its compilers [between the period of 15th to 18th century] are nothing but Sanskrit names which got distorted due to sharing of knowledge with many/other people, correct pronunciation of Sanskrit demands that your tongue moves in a set/pre-defined rhythm for a word and a specific area of mind gets vibrated as a result of pronouncing that Sanskrit word [I have made some studies on this aspect of Sanskrit language and will like to present it in my next article on Mantra’s], this needs a practice from childhood, which if absent gives the wrong pronunciation of the word which results in distortion of language, those of you who know  the difference between French and English pronunciation of the word “Fiancee” will understand what I want to say.

At the time of Varahamihira, Indian astrology was shared with Greeks even Kalyan Verma in his treatise Saravali clearly stated that अत एव विस्तारेभ्यो यवननरेन्द्रादिरचितशास्त्रेभ्यः which means “I [Kalyan Verma] am elaborating the science [Shastra] which was created by [taught by because all knowledge comes from Shiva only] lord of Yavana’s and others. [Lord of Yavana’s can means king of Yavana’s, or also the one who is most influential, In Sanskrit the word lord is used for “the most prominent one”]. According to Kashyapa Samhita [Kashyapa was a Vedic sage, disciples of any sage/teacher when wrote books based on their knowledge, named their books as it was written by the sage himself – the Vedic sense of gratitude], there are 18 reformers of the science of astrology.

सूर्यः पितामहो व्यासो वशिस्ठोअत्रिः पराशरःI
कश्यपो नारदो गर्गो मरीचिमर्नुरअङ्गिराII
रोमशः पौलिशस्चैव च्यवनो यवनो भृगुःI
शौनकोअष्टादशास्चैते ज्योतिःशास्त्रप्रवर्तकाःII

Surya, Pitamaha, Vyasa, Vashistha, Atri, Parashara, Kashyapa, Narada, Garga, Marichi, Manu, Angira, Romash, Paulish, Chayavana, Yavana, Bhrigu and Shaunaka are the eighteen reformers of astrology.
Some sages add the name of Lomesh replacing any other name but the count of reformers of Vedic Astrology are eighteen only. I did some researches on this and found that some names are symbolic and by God’s grace have been able to find which system of astrology was reformed by whom [let we talk about this in detail in another article]. Here what I wanted to show/justify with this Shloka is that Yavanacharya [which means lord of people of Greek country – as per Vedic historians] is also counted with eighteen reformers of astrology. Here, first we need to understand what does reformers mean, we know that all knowledge is in Veda’s and Veda’s have two part one is knowledge part and another is Dharma part [Dharma means how to conduct duties, In Vedic philosophy one has many kinds of Karma’s (things to be done) they are divided into many subdivisions, one division is Nitya Karma which means duties to be performed daily, in daily duties it is recommended to do Jap, Yagya, Mantra Jaap daily (Vedic Sacrifice, oblations to fire and chanting Mantras) are daily duties of every true follower of Sanatana Dharma popularly called as Hinduism]. Upanishad’s elaborates about knowledge part of Veda’s whereas Purana’s elaborate Dharma part of Veda’s. But what is the use of discussing about knowledge of Veda’s and conducting Vedic duties, as per me the use is to make one self-aware, to give birth to spirituality in heart and to know about the nature of God and to realise the fact which Bhagwad Geeta tells us in a nutshell about Atma and Godhead. Based on their study of different scriptures and their experiences of spirituality many eminent have found many ways to attain godhead known as Gyan Marga, Bhakti Marga, Yoga Marga etc. Followers of these different paths [Marga means path/road] have their own method of realising God, Gyana Marga people think about god in an academic sense, people of Bhakti Marga feel god in form of an idol or image and treat him like his friend/father/brother etc. they see god and talk to him like he is living with him whereas people of Yoga Marga concentrates more on following a pre-defined set of living in order to make their body capable of realising God, and to realise that God lives nowhere else but in their body. For people of Gyana Marga god is nowhere but everywhere, for people of Bhakti Marga god is an idol/image for people of Yoga Marga god is in the body, but the ultimate aim of all these different paths is to know and realise God.
Same is the case with astrology, according to me Lord Shiva gave the ultimate knowledge about time to every sage, every sage as an effect of their penance to lord became capable to see past present and future in the same way as we are able to see/know about past present and future of any character in a suspense thriller movie, according to Vedic philosophy time is not linear but linear as well as circular [to be dealt in another article, I want to keep this article in word limits but don’t want to leave you with half/incomplete knowledge as other astrologers do. Hence, I make a reference and then leave it for a new article]. Vedic sages became able to see past present and future and also knew why events are caused, the basic aim of astrology is to predict future, Parashara himself told that लोकयात्रापरिज्ञानमायुषो निर्णयं तथा which means that “the aim of this science is to tell/predict how will be the travel of soul/human on this Loka [planet]” (This shloka also tells us that all those astrologers who tell you that Vedic Jyotish talks about Karma and not mundane things etc are just half-baked astrologers with incomplete knowledge). Like spiritualists made different paths to practise spirituality with the main aim to achieve self-realisation, Vedic Sages reformed/transformed Vedic Astrology into the different sets of methods to prognosticate future.

When we hear the term Yavana, we instantly start thinking about Greek people, but we must remember that this division of Greek and Europe is later day invention/division and is political in nature, knowledge is not political. If you look at the description of Apsara [celestial maiden] made in Vedic Purana’s and if you try to correlate it to the world as it is now, you will find that people of Russia and surrounding areas are most capable to become Apsara, in the same lines when we say Maya got the knowledge from Surya we are just referring to those areas of lands where deserts have covered a prominent land mass, if someone establishes an observatory there and start worshipping God then it is very natural to believe that Lord Surya came to give him knowledge because Sun/Lord Surya has most influenced that part of land. In the same line when we used to word Asura it means those people who are not following Vedic ways of life [Sura which means God in Sanskrit literature, lives their life according to Vedic Dharma, and all those who oppose Vedic Dharma or don’t live their life in accordance to Vedic Dharma can be termed as Asura rightly, A meaning “Not” in Sanskrit language]. In Ramayana, father of mother Sita is named King Janaka, King means the one ruling the land and Janaka means father but also Janaka was the name of that area where mother Sita was born [this place is in Nepal and many pilgrims go there from India using now under renovation train route of Jayanagar to Janakpur, India and Nepal share a free-border].

Having known this, now it is very clear to us that the name Yavanacharya means the sage from the land named Yavana, in Vedic times different names were given to different lands, for example, what is now Odisha was Utkala Desha in ancient India, what is now Uttarakhand was Kaling in ancient India. Jatakaparijata [Chapter one Shloka sixty] tells us that Yavana Desha [the land of Yavana] comes under the rulership of the sign Aquarius. It is very striking to note that in this Shloka the land’s given to twelve signs are still under India or falls around India [atleast those names which can be still identified such as Karnata, Kerala, Malaya, Koshala etc.] Thus it is very easy to say that Yavana was a place around India.

upto this point was written on 27th August 2018, but then I became busy with other preoccupations and now finishing the remaining part of the article on 3rd April 2019, Kindly bear with some inconsistencies

Now we have three sets of information, firstly we have basic indications of houses from Brihat Jataka and Saravali, and then we have detailed significations of houses and lastly we have special names (groups) of houses. Now what needs to be done (as I have been emphasizing in this article) is that we understand what a Bhava want to tell us, once that is done then it is very simple to make new significations of houses because you understand houses deeply.

What I have found that nowadays learners only memorise things and rarely understand them, this lack of understanding becomes a handicap resulting in either the astrologer being lost or repeating the same things, because he hasn’t understood the Bhava’s he won’t be able to make new significations (or make significations for those things which he hadn’t read/memorised carefully). Another problem is those people who don’t understand the intricacies of astrology and use their so-called sense of logic to make things, they forget their basic logic was formed from words of sages and then rather than looking/understanding sage’s words he starts using his lame logic which results in faulty understanding.

Given below is a list of significations from Brihat Jataka and Saravali with an approach to explaining why Jataka Parijata included a certain signification to a house (based on the understanding we took from Brihat Jataka and Saravali) and we will also try to understand deeper significations of houses/Bhava’s.

1st house Also known as Lagna bhava is firstly a Kantaka which means thorn thus it indicates that if you don’t maintain this house properly then it can punish you as well, you have to follow the indications of the planets in ascendant otherwise it will disturb many things, for example someone having Saturn, if starts gaining weight then it can be very bad for his body, whereas the same situation may not be problematic for someone with Jupiter in ascendant (this is the reason that in almost all the Yoga’s which are primarily based on Kendra’s such as Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga, there are given some special physical characteristics as well, which if not found over native’s body then it can be said that the aforesaid yoga won’t work in its true beauty).  Varahamihira says it is Tanu which means steam of a plant (here body) and Kalpa which is a span of time, it means that until and unless lagna is activated native won’t be able to get effects of combinations in his horoscope (you can notice that in case of Rajayoga’s, Lagna first needs to activate the chart by coming into Dasa-Antardasa only then Rajayoga will work, Pratyantardasa lord at birth time must also have connection with ascendant indicating the true/right time when the native was born). Kalyan Varma in Saravali tells that it is Shakti which means strength (not only physical but of the complete horoscope as well, I have noticed in case of famous and influential people, lagna have to be strong, with a weak Lagna complete horoscope is like lusterless, powerless, Lagna is very important as it gives his powers to complete horoscope). Jataka Parijata tells lagna as Udaya signifying rise of the native (see my previous comment under bracket), along with this Vaidyanath Dikshita also tells us that Lagna is Adhya means starting (of anything), Vilagna (which means small Lagna, here according to me, the reference is to other ascendant’s which rise under an ascendant also known as divisional chart ascendant’s) and Hora (hora is not a Sanskrit word, it is made by a manipulation of word अहोरात्र which mean day and night, thus hora means a specific time in a certain day and night, here hora means this only. There is a Hora in which you are born which is based on weekday known as Kala Hora, then there is a divisional chart by the name of Hora Kundali and now we that Lagna is also called as Hora, too much confusion, isn’t it?).

2nd House or Dhana Bhava is a Panaphara which indicates growth to the previous Kendra (Here Lagna/1st house) and the signification of 2nd house is Kutumba meaning family which is a growth for the self, once someone is born he comes into a family and find an expended environment for him this is the implication of Panaphara. Another signification for the 2nd house is Sva which means self, Lagna also indicates self, here it means the family belonging to one’s own self, one’s very own and direct family (for the indirect family there are other houses), it’s signification is Artha as well which means wealth (combining this Artha with Sva we come to know that 2nd house indicates self-earned wealth and the earth that belongs to one’s own self such as things which one gets into inheritance). Jataka Parijata tells us that 2nd house also indicates Vaak which means speech (we need to understand it here, according to Vedic literature Vaak herself is a deity which in later times developed as Saraswati which indicates knowledge, here it means that 2nd house indicates knowledge, but it is more self-acquired knowledge, such as self-learning or those things which comes from direct experience such as Astrology. Shri H. R. Seshadri Iyer rightly tells that this indicates knowledge that is passed on from tradition to tradition because this is self-acquired, you can’t learn traditional knowledge in schools. It is usually taught by parents to their child in a rather informal way which the child himself is supposed to practise and learn). It also signifies Bhukti which means eating (an essential part to keep oneself alive, isn’t it, this is one of the reason’s behind the secondary significations of the 2nd house as Maraka as well), it indicates eyes as well, here, take the word eye as sight and then you will understand that no one can teach you how to look, you yourself have to learn it.

3rd House or Sahaja Bhava is an Upachaya which means increasing/growth as well as an Aapoklima whose work is to reduce or keep in check the developments of the previous Panaphara to make the person ready to work for/face next Kendra, as we already know now that Kendras are essential conditions of life which if unfulfilled can become a thorn in leg (Kantaka), these Aapoklima are those houses which makes you ready for Kantaka’s. The word Upachaya means growth but Jataka Parijata hints us something more by telling us that all Anupachaya (houses other than Upachaya) are of पीडक्शसंज्ञा means the one which gives pain, now it is something important, we find that between the four Upachaya’s two are Panaphara’s and other two are Kendra and Aapoklima which means only these houses don’t give pain which means it is not that painful for a person (we will see it with an explanation as we progress through the section) other houses may give pain, for example in the previous house where it indicated self-earned wealth, it is a known fact that it becomes a source of pain when your income/self-earned money increases those of your other family members, this is what is indicated.   3rd house indicates Sahottha/Sahaja/Sahodara which means the one who is born from the same womb (siblings from the same mother) notice here cousin are not included (as some people mistakenly take), it also indicates Vikarama which means valour (this is preparing for next Kendra), after you are born in Lagna Bhava now the next demand from you is your home, you should make your own home (in Indian society usually the son have a pressure of having his separate home only after marriage whereas in western countries it happens very quickly and after legally being an adult, person needs to have a home for himself), for this you need to take some risks right, or to say that to sustain your family (which again is indicated in 4th house) you have to take some risk, isn’t it. It is named as Duschikya which according to me means misery and a reason for anxiety. Jataka Parijata names it is Veerya as well which means potency (one’s ability to do anything), Dhairya which means patience and Karna which means ears (these significations related to body parts are found based on Drekkana division which I will explain in another article).

4th House also known as Matri Bhava is another Kendra (remember what I wrote about Kendra’s above) [we completed journey to three houses of Kendra, Panaphara and Aapoklima hence I won’t be explaining the same thing again, now onwards I will take special significations to houses which were not attributed up-to this point for clarification]. 4th house is also termed as Chaturastra (which I think is a miswriting of the word Chatustaya which simply means Chatu means four and Ashtaya means eight). Fourth house is named Bandhu which means very close person, according to my opinion this is a special kind of relationship that we develop with some people, for example many people are known to us or are our friends, but some of them become very close to us, this is Bandhu, in modern times this also indicates relationships as well (Hence, 4th house and not 5th house is to be taken for relationships, I have also used 4th house for live-in-relationships). It means Griha meaning home (where one lives), it is not your family but the house that you make (see it is 3rd from your self-earned wealth, your Parakrama working with Sva). It is also named as Hibuka and Rasatala which indicates it is the lowest point of the sky when someone was born, other two significations of Veshma, Patala and Rasatala indicates that this point is in the sky (this is astronomically something very important, rising sign is based on the place someone is born, hence placed on earth, setting sign the 7th house is exactly opposite that point which again falls in earth, but 10th house which is upper sky and 4th house which is lower sky doesn’t fall on earth, they remain in sky hence this is told). Here, one more important thing is noticeable, Patala means netherworlds, which is described as the abode of those people who do bad deeds, this indicates something important (refer to 9th house), the 4th house also indicates Sukha which means happiness, it also indicates Jala which means water (this is indicative of many things such as watery planets getting strength in 4th house, watery signs getting strength in 4th house etc. Same is the case with other Kendra’s, 7th house indicates Vayu due to Saturn getting Dibala there when afflicted it can indicate diseases related to Vayu Tattva or Ayurveda, 10th house is Agni and Lagna is Tridosa). It is called Vriddhi as well which means growth (this is not the growth of Upachaya where you need to do something to grow something, it the growth which happens naturally, for example, if you love someone your affection for that person grows, like this), it also indicates Kshiti which means Land

The 5th house also known as Putra Sthana which means that it indicates children (Putra technically means son’s but according to me here it indicates those children who completely fulfil the duty of a male child, which is to give comfort to his parents in old age, such children can either be male or female, it doesn’t matter, then which house can indicate such children’s which don’t fulfil their Dharma towards their parents?),  as well as Pratibha (Talent), Dhi (Intelligence), Deva (God/Luck), Raja (king/kingdom), Pitranandana (son of father) and Panchaka which literally means five but here it must be a special set of five things. Firstly we find no mention of Vidya (knowledge/education) here, it indicates one’s talents and intelligence but not Vidya, so here is a dilemma, no fixed house is for education, according to me in today’s times where our work/profession is directly connected to our education, we should judge education as well from 10th house, 5th house can only indicate the level of intellect and 2nd house the education that we get traditionally (for example a person born in a family of businessmen need not to do MBA to do business), with this understanding, we can in a sense use 4th house for education, because planets in 4th house will affect 10th house, but be very sure that no certain house indicates education (and I have a separate and special formula for that, which God willing I will write soon). Deva means deity as well as fortune, this indicates both (there is a speciality with Kona’s that I will highlight under the 9th house), the significations of Raja and Pitranandana are complimentary, it indicates the family lineage which in ancient times used to rule over the throne and in turn all the living members of the family remained in power always, in today’s world it indicated the intellect to make one’s own empire which makes it synonymous with other two significations of this house Prathiba and Dhi.

The 6th house which is the last Upacaya and Aapoklima house which indicates there will be reductions but without pain (which will be evident from other significations of this house), this house indicates Ari which means enemies, Kshata which means wounds, Vrana which means ulcers, Roga which means diseases, Amsa which means a portion, Shastrabhaya which means dangers from weapons and it is named as Shatkona which means something with six angles or the sixth angel, because there can be only four trinal rotations in a horoscope it cannot mean 6th trinal rotation, hence it means something with six angles, these six angles are 6th house, 8th house, 11th house, 12th house, 2nd house and 3rd house which shares the significations of 6th house respectively, 6th house (enemy), 8th house (wounds), 11th house (ulcers), 12th house (diseases), 2nd house (portion (of food)) and 3rd house (danger from weapons, your valour sometimes can kill you as well, remember in ancient times valour was marching to a new country to defeat his king and win the land), these are the six houses which work in a combination (hint). Now what about Upachaya, now this is the difference between two Aapoklima-Upachaya’s (3rd house is independent in this matter, whereas 6th house make a group with 8th and 12th houses), Varahamihira writes that “some authors say that they are not always improving न नित्यमेके (referring to Upachaya’s), Swami Vigyanananda in his commentary to Brihat Jataka tells us that “Garga and others are of the opinion that the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses cease to be Upachaya houses if malefic planet or planets which are unfriendly to the rulers of these four houses should either occupy such houses or aspect the same. But the author (Varahamihira) does not agree with Garga and he is supported in his views by Satyacharya and Yavaneshwara” I am of the opinion that the above said comment by Garga is only applicable to the 6th house whereas for other three Upachaya’s the statement of Varahamihira is applicable. This means that if benefic planets friendly to 6th lord if placed in 6th house or aspecting then the above said bad effects will be controlled to a large extent.

The 7th house also known as Jaya Bhava is termed as Dhyuna which according to R. Santhanam means gambling, but in my view, it must mean dusk which is representative of the condition of Sun in this house and it also goes in-line with Indian philosophy which tells us that wasting one’s sperm is nearing death early, 7th house indicating marriage is the first in the dusk of life (following this philosophy), it indicated Patni which means wife but in a larger sense it will indicate spouse, it is also named as Stri which means female in general (taking the assumption that is a Purush Jataka, male nativity), it is also named as Jamitra which according to R. Santhanam means “future good-luck of one’s wife”, it is also named as Chittoha which according to me means the one who can completely cover your consciousness hence distorting your plannings for Brahmacharya and spiritual life etc (although one can be spiritual after marriage as well). It is named as Kama (which means desire and copulation), Jaya means the one whom we win (indicating spouse, won the heart of another spouse), Kalatra which directly means wife, Gamana which means going (as in travelling as well as in sexual intercourse) and Kalatrasampata which means wealth of wife (some astrologers take 8th house for money of wife because it is 2nd from 7th and it is supported by inferior classics such as Uttarakalamritam, but I am against this view due to this very clear signification/statement from “A” grade authentic and authoritative classic “Jataka Parijata” written by Vaidyanatha Dikshita who lived around 1450AD, on the other hand, the authorship etc. of Uttarakamrita is unknown and doubtful along with his time’s).

The Eighth house also is known as Randhra bhava which means hole (this has a very special signification, I think Pandit Vetal Shastri or Ramyatna Ojha (forgot name) mentions in his commentary on Laghu Parashari that 8th lord if he joins with any Rajayoga he can destroy that Rajayoga, this is the implication of this statement, 8th lord being in any combination which is good destroy that combination, until and unless, 8th lord is exalted, in own Rashi or himself making the yoga (for example in Aquarius Lagna Mercury himself being Kendra lord, cannot disturb a Rajayoga), it is also known as Marana which means death, Vinash which means destruction (as it does with good yoga’s), Dehavivara which means diffused body, Ayush which means longevity and Rana which means fight/battle (this signification is from Jataka Parijata, Order is first two significations from Brihat Jataka, then next two from Saravali and rest all others from Jataka Parijata, but the repeated significations in the three books are written only once with most authentic classic given more preference over other two, now compare this signification with my explanation about Shatkona in significations of 6th house).

The Ninth house also is known as Bhagya Sthana which means fortune/luck, another name for 9th house is Shubha which means auspicious, Guru which means preceptor, Punya which means merits/good deeds of previous live’s, Tapa which means austerities and Dharma which means religion (in the traditional sense as well as in humanitarian sense).

Now something important, 5th house is called Trikona which means trine and 9th house is called Tri-Trikona which either means the third trine or the trine from the trine. Taking the first interpretation we are bound to take Lagna as a Kona as well as Kendra (otherwise the reasoning that Kendra has to be four and Kona have to be three will fall) and according to other significations 9th house is the same as 5th house in many matters, I am writing this because there us much confusion in today’s astrological world regarding this thing, some classics say 9th house for past life Karma’s some take 5th and there are many other similarities in them as well, according to me this is because nature of these two houses being very identical that anything that can be seen from 5th house can be seen from 9th house and vice-versa. this is for the same reason that Deva as a deity as well as Bhagya is written for both 5th and 9th house in different classics and same is the case for Punya etc.

This is the best example of Bhavat-Bhavam and I have not seen any other example of Bhavat-Bhavam. I have read sages writing that children can also be seen from 9th house but I have never seen any sage writing brothers can also be seen from 5th house or mother can also be seen from 7th house or profession can also be seen from 7th house, but people made it, I don’t know why a confused person who was not well trained started this and now whole astrological community is following the same as a sheep without applying their mind and taking pains to search through classics about what is sages opinion on the same topic. According to me, Bhavat Bhavam can only be applied to those houses who are in a pair (Trikona for 5-9) and only two in number and this can be only applied for the 5th and 9th house and for no other houses. Bhava as Lagna was taken by sages from Bhava’s as well as from Karaka’s and that is another topic, but I find Bhavat Bhavam as completely useless, it’s little importance is there in the case of Dasa results. (what a planet is not strong enough to give his results then other planets associating with the same planet can give their results, if they are also not strong enough to give effects then Bhavat-Bhavam house will give results, if Bhavat-Bhavam house lord is also weak to give effects then planet the concerned Bhavat-Bhava will give effect and if even that is weak then Lagna can give effect of all houses). Sad state is this, people don’t understand the application or limitation of a technique but rather start using their lame logic and mess everything up, not only that they also start preaching the same and poison the mind of new aspiring students, may God give such people the courage to go through classics and overcome their shortcomings.

Now, come to the 4th house thing, which indicates Patala (netherworlds), If anyone reads the description of Patala he will be frightened like hell (patala) in Garuda Purana. So, Yes, this 4th house is Patala and in Patala lives Rakshasa’s, and if there is a Rakshasa (malefic) in your Patala (4th house) and that is angry as well (afflicted or having bad qualities) then the blow of that malefic will be very bad. I have many examples, but I won’t reproduce them, as an astrologer, I have a responsibility to keep secrets of my clients as secrets only, however, soon I will write a case study of one of my very good client cum friend which will make this thing very clear.

The Tenth House also known as Karma Sthana indicates Karma’s which literally means anything that you do, but in the context means your prime purpose or the prime work which you will do on/for this earth, this may not necessarily mean a profession but for many of us means profession only, what I want to emphasize is that see the horoscope of Gautama Buddha, he had the most famous renunciation combination in 10th house, which means his Karma for this life was renunciation and getting other people into this as well, this was not his profession but his Karma (hint, so when you find your Karma is not indicated by your 10th house, this is the time my friend when you should reconsider your choices and decisions), This is a Kendra Upachaya which means it keeps on increasing (work never ends) and it doesn’t give miseries/pains as well (provided you are doing your Karma and not distracted by this world of illusion) (it has many other implications which I think you must have learned till now with these much examples),  it is also named Agya which means order and this is a hint I think, people are confused between the house for father, weather it is 9th or 10th, some people give logic that if 4th is mother than her husband should be in 7th from her and thus father should be in 10th (north India) whereas some give logic that because 5th indicates children and you are children of your father hence 9th house should indicate father as ascendant is 5th from 9th house (south India), I take the south Indian view for two reasons, first because when it comes to mother and father from a child’s presective the relationship is not sexual at-all (see the significations of 7th house and see how many significations indicates at sexuality and how many at wife as person) and another thing is mother may have two spouses but only the one who gave birth to you can be your technical father isn’t it, and the third and the authority of sages is this signification, Agya means order, hence 10th house indicates the order someone belongs from, it is the order (as we take in traditional order etc.) this is your tradition of father and grandfather, what we call as belonging to a family in India. 10th house indicates this which will be evident from other significations as well. The 10th house is also named as Aspada or Rajaspada which means sovereignty, Maan which means prestige/name, Gagana which means sky (astronomical signification, refer to 4th house significations), Vapaar which means business (not the one you are thinking, anything with which you deal is your Vyapaar, here it does not indicate at a specific type of employment). Madhya means middle which refers to the middle position of Sun in a day (which is astronomically represented in 10th house), Gyan (from Jataka Parijata 1.52, now refer my comment about education houses under “The Fifth house”), it is also named as Meshurana which can means the headgear of peacock which indicates prestige once again.

The Eleventh house is Upachaya as well as Panaphara which means this is the only increment which is good, off-course it is, because it indicates Aya which means income, Bhav which means world and birth (secondary meaning), this house indicates Maya, remember Upachaya’s may not give pain but they are bad houses except 10th, so yes being in Maya is no pain materially but a real pain spiritually and it is named as Upanthya which means penultimate as well indicate that this is the second last house of the horoscope.

The Twelfth house also is known as Rippha which means expenditure, Vyaya which again means expenditure and Antyayam which means last signifying this as the last house of the zodiac.

A question arises in end, why this long an article on Bhava’s which is so basic and so poorly treated, it is for three reasons.

  1. Basics are very important, if you are not well conversant with basics then you won’t be able to understand sages in his true sense which will lead you to faulty understanding which results in failed predictions or no predictions at all but only psychology and posing as an astrologer which is modern 21st century Nakshatra Suchi, when you don’t understand sages your resort to weaker techniques such as K. P. etc. which is another pitfall (you can predict after compromising your intellect etc. but you never get the real taste of astrology as Jyotisha.
  2. Understand things in such detail, give you some hints in between the lines which helps you further in developing an understanding and that understanding is something which comes as a helping hand to you when you are stuck with either something new or something which you haven’t worked on (for example gay/lesbian relationships, live-in-relationships, IVF children etc.)
  3. Such a clear and deep understanding of basics gives you a solid foundation on which you can in future base your researches, and because these are based on very strong fundamentals, it will rarely fail. In end I will repeat the same advice which I give to everyone, in every three months, take a classic and start reading chapters related to Rashishilaadhyaya and Grahashilaadhyaya (chapters related to Rashi and Graha’s), In the meanwhile think why there is no separate Bhavashilaadhyaya (chapters related to Bhava’s?
