Introduction – Jaimini Adhyaya 1, Pada 2, Shloka 1 Says – अथ स्वांशो ग्रहाणाम – 1.2.1. which means Now effects of Swamsa are being told.

Amsa means divisional charts and there are 16 divisional chats advocated by Parashara and other sages. where Jaimini seems to give the main emphasis only on Drekkana, Rashi and Navamsa. Between them, Navamsa is the division that is always referred to when Amsa is said in any classic. That also stands correct in the view that Jaimini uses Drekkana for longevity and Rajyoga and rarely for other effects. whereas Navamsa can be dealt with for all matters. Thus amsa being referred to here is mainly Navamsa.

Swa can mean a lot of things. Swa means self and Amsa means division [here navamsa] All translators have taken the Navamsa sign as Swamsa. whereas in my humble opinion as Swa means self. anything that signifies self can be taken here. Mainly Atmakaraka is said to signify self [swa] lagnesh is famous for being the significator of self [swa].

What I advise – Take Atmakaraka’s Navamsa position to see effects related to Karakamsa which is in line with what other translators opine. Along with this one can take other reference points too. like when some diseases are being told one can use Lagnesha’s Navamsa also to see the effects as Lagnesh is the controller of body and health. For one’s wife, one can see 7th from Darakaraka, or Saptmesh, or Lord of Upapada Lagna in Navamsa. Also, dasa lord can be seen in Navamsa and judged for the effects being faced in particular dasa. [This is a topic worth researching and right now I am unable to make a statement]

One must keep in mind that at end of this chapter Sage Jaimini makes a statement that all these effects must be judged in sign dasas. this makes our statement correct.

Swamsa Rashi

Aries – Troubles from Rat’s Cats (Small four-legged animals) [Accidents from vehicles]

Taurus – Happiness from Four-footed animals (Vehicles can be meant by four-footed animals also one can take this as Professional security as in earlier times having an animal like a cow make sure that food is always available to you. This kind of approach must be applied while using these statements and rather than expecting these results to occurs when some planet falls in these Rashis [atmakaraka] it is better to expect these results in Dasa’s of these signs)

Gemini – Herpes, Itches, Skin problems [diseases of Mercury]

Cancer – Fear from water, Leprosy [diseases of Moon sign lord]

Leo – Danger from large canines [one can see nature of the sign is used to show danger from that animal/signification except for Ta, Li, Aq, PI. It is worthwhile to note that in any Dasa. Dasa Rashi itself will be Paka Rashi and it is very detrimental in judging the health of natives during the dasa and when afflicted it is not unusual to predict death due to these things for natives – see how intelligently Jaimini codes things in simple-looking Sutras which people aren’t worth giving importance]

Virgo – effects of Gemini and Danger form fire [Problems related to sign lord and because Mars will lord 3rd and 8th from Dasa Rashi his significations (Fire) can also cause death]

Libra – Gains from Business [Can be death in the marketplace when adverse and afflicted]

Scorpio – Danger from Water/Snake/Insects. Gets less milk of mother [can mean the death of the mother, separation from mother etc.]

Sagittarius – Fall from height/Vehicle

Capricorn – Danger from Aquatic animals/Flying animals. Planetary ills [They will face more – Or this dasa will give results of all bad yogas] itches, psychic disorders, Arthritis

Aquarius – Will dug well, tanks, tubes for mankind and will be religious [it clearly shows there needs to be predicted in these signs dasa]

Pisces – Becomes regular in Dharma and gets Salvation.

When we read jaimini sutras we find 1st chapter deals with Basic terms, 2nd with Swamsa, 3rd with Arudha, 4th with Upapada and then complete 2nd chapter is said to deal with Dasas of 40 kinds is what Somnath in his kalpalatha also opines. Now my question is how will you read the effect of dasa. Suppose a dasa is for longevity sage while describing it gives computation of dasa and in under which condition death will happen [longevity will be curtailed] now my question is what about other dasas before death. There must be some effects of those dasas. How will you judge them? There is no special chapter for Dasa Phala. This is the difference between the Jaimini and Parashara’s systems of astrology. In Jaimini we are supposed to make Dasa Rashi as lagna and read effects. Thus all these Shlokas will be applicable in dasa and must be remembered by heart. Their application we will see in our articles on Jaimini Dasa’s.

तत्र  means “at that place” and by KaTaPaYaDi it means “two” and this word made many contradictions in interpretation of next Shlokas of this chapter. for Tatra, some took the same house [Supported by Vriddha Karika] and some took 2nd house [KaTaPaYaDi] meaning. First, we will see those yogas whose effects are not doubted [With the use of Tatra] and then we will see those Yogas whose effects are doubted [in which house these effects are felt] and will try to find a solution to the problem/Confusion.

 Swamsa Lagna

The aspect of Sun and Venus [One can also take Sun or Venus because both is said to give government-related profession] makes one government servant. प्रेष्य is the word used which means small worker whom officers send for their work or someone not in a high position but in the government job.

Moon aspected/conjoined Venus – One will have knowledge of chemicals [can make one doctor/chemist]

Moon aspected/conjoined Mercury – One will be a doctor [this is specific yoga for a doctor while the previous one can make doctor as well as can make scientist/chemist or anyone working with chemicals – can also me mechanics]

10th House

Aspect or Occupation of Mercury – One gets the effect of Saturn [which is प्रसिद्ध कर्मा that means Famous work. which in my humble opinion due to Saturn being significator of old tradition and things will indicate family profession]

The aspect of benefics [Can also be expanded to occupation] – Firm Translator says it is firm minded, can also mean firm fortune as Shri Sanjay Rath suggests. It is written, “Chosen to settle disputes or a priest” which means he is a firm minded intellectual. One can see this deals with Profession and this can mean a person with fixed professional goals and determined to achieve them.

Sun in 10th aspected only by Jupiter – Cowherd [Cow is a very big word. may look simple. In ancient times those having their own animal were rich people. then there were some having animals like an ox who used to work in other’s field – which nowadays can mean employed whereas those having cow can get milk for their food and need not work – which means employments/business in today’s language. Now, this cowherd can also mean an entrepreneur which gives food to many. as Single cow doesn’t need to be taken in fields for food. The farmer gives them food but when there are many cows one takes them outside to feed them. So one can see the word may look simple but contains deep meaning hidden inside them and such is the complexity of Jyotish and Vedic sciences. Also, the nature of the Sun is rule and prominence and one can say one is prominent in their field. as all will have cow but cowherd will have many cows. This may also mean prominence in whatever work one is engaged in. Depending on other yogas this may mean entrepreneurship or prominence in profession]

4th House

Venus and Moon [occupation/aspect] – palatial residence [only Venus or Moon won’t give anything. also Mercury as it is absent in these yogas. Having Mercury in the 4th house from Swamsa or only Venus or Moon in the 4th house from Swamsa or aspecting them make sure that in the period concerned person lives in a rented house. Or when the same occurs in 4th from Atmakaraka or 4th lord of Rashi chakra same can be expected]

Exalted planet – Palatial residence

Saturn or/and Rahu – House made of Stone

Ketu or/and Mars – House made of Bricks

Jupiter – House made of wood

Sun – House made of grass

The house houses in decreasing order. Sun gives most ordinary kind of house. Venus and Moon give their own bungalow. Saturn and Rahu give big but Uncomfortable homes whereas Mars and Ketu give the same kind of house but are comfortable to live in. Jupiter may give Farmhouse/Villa.

Moon – First mating will be in uncovered place [again Jaimini gives a complex shloka. First mating can that person will marry while living in a rented house. Dr Suresh Chandra Mishra says in his personal experience when Moon or Mercury is in the 4th house one lives in a rented house] Complex shloka must be interpreted carefully.

Moon aspected by Venus – White leprosy

Moon aspected by Mars – leprosy [of serious nature]

Moon aspected by Ketu – Black leprosy

One can see here Moon was not in Yogas of giving home [along with Venus and Mercury – Venus alone can also give the palatial house as he signifies luxury, Mercury is said to make a person always live in a rented house. whereas Moon along with giving rented house also gives leprosy of a different kind with other planet’s aspect. One can take this as Karaka Bhava Nashto]

9th House

Benefics [aspect/conjunction] – indulged in Dharma, truth-speaking, Obedient to his guru.

Malefics – Opposite results [Hates dharma, Lier, Cheats his guru]

Saturn and/or Rahu – Cheats his guru [द्रोह means going against, not following, cheating, deceit]

Sun and Jupiter – Don’t believe in his Guru’s. All translators translate this whereas Shri Sanjay Rath changes the shloka to गुरुविश्वासः whereas all other translators give गुरावविश्वासः  and says  “the native is a confidant (or faithful) of his elders and teachers.” with the logic that “Stanza 1.2.48-51 gives the general principles concerning the 9th house that deals with dharma (or religion) which is inherited from father (most societies are patriarchal) and the higher learning/wisdom which is obtained from one’s teachers or from the boss in the office. The natural Significators for the two are the Sun and Jupiter.” which seems correct. or can also mean a person by himself tries to find the real substance of dharma [by experience]. I can’t make any statement on this as of now.

7th House

Moon and/or Jupiter [aspect/association] – Beautiful wife

Rahu – Widow

Saturn – Old aged [As compared to native], diseased, ascetic [not interested much in affairs of home]

Mars – Deformed to defective limbs [It can indicate some sexual problems like pregnancy disorders etc. or when afflicted can really cause defective or deformed limbs]

Sun – Spouse favoured and protected by family [or one who favours or protects the family].

Mercury – Skilled/Artistic

3rd House [and other combined houses]

Malefic – Valorous

Benefic – Coward

Malefics in 3rd and 6th – Engaged in agricultural works. [Here we get a small but clear hint that Jaimini uses houses combined not alone to decide profession. However, we will see this in detail when we will come to the contradictory part of Sutras. As of now, one may understand that malefics in both 3rd and 6th will give one such physical prowess that he can live upon it.

Jupiter in 9th – Big landlord [this must be included under 9th house but why I haven’t done so because results say विशेषेन which means especially or prominently. thus this must be used only with the previous shloka [as Shri Irangnati Rangacharya suggests] that mean if malefics be in 3rd and the 6th one will live by agriculture and if at the same time Jupiter be in 9th house one will employ others to work in his fields [see how his aspect on 10th house Sun makes almost same kind of effect]

12th House

Benefic sign – One departs to  heaven [after death]

Ketu – Salvation [some commentators (Earlier) used KaTaPaYaDi for Ketu and interpreted as Swamsa Lagna – Which doesn’t look logical and hence that argument is left.

Ketu in Pisces or Cancer – Gives High world [can be said as salvation and free from all karmas] [Shri Sanjay Rath and Shriman Irangnati Rangachaya adds Aries and Sagittarius – One must test this]

Malefic – One neither gets higher world nor Moksha and must come again and again on this world to face karmas.

Note – One must decide by his own discrimination when what is referred to as Swamsa [Which means amsa of self where the self can mean – Atmakaraka, Lagnesh] [this point will further be clear in Arudha chapter] However here one can be very clear that these are referred to  Atmakaraka’s Amsa only as he is said to give bondage or Salvation. One can see the chart of Shri Ramkrishna Paramahamsa where Sun is AK [from our method – see our article on chara karakas] and 12th from it is empty. But is aspected by [Rashi drishti] of Moon, Rahu, Ketu and Mercury where Ketu is in Cancer. The moon shows Devi and Rahu kali/Durga whereas Mars indicates Kartikeya. Two planets indicate at Devi. Ketu isn’t being used as now he comes in special yoga for supreme salvation. and Mars shows the fiery nature of deity whereas Moon is motherly. But why not in 12th from Atmakaraka Amsa – He himself said he will take another incarnation in his “Shri Ramkrishna Vachnamrit”

Devotion to which deity

Sun and/or Ketu [ketu is supplementary here main is Sun. Ketu just show one heading towards the highest form of salvation] – Shiva [by worshipping shiva – who being lord of Tantra destroys one’s notion of good and bad]

Moon – Gauri/Parvati

Venus – Lakshmi

Mars – Kartikeya/Skanda

Mercury and/or Saturn – Vishnu

Jupiter – Shiva and Parvati [Ardhanarishwar/Sambashiva – Primal form/supreme form]

Rahu – Ghosts-Bad spirits/Durga

Ketu – Ganesha/Skanda

Saturn or Venus in malefic sign – one indulges in worshipping demigods [One can worship demigods or some type of yakshini or other supernatural powers to get their wish fulfilled which sometimes is done with very bad future consequences, denying moksha – we will touch them in our article’s on Prashna]

6th from AmK [one following AK in degrees – it makes clear that from last adhikaar sutra 1.2.71 all these were said with reference to AK] – should also b judges for same [finding one’s deity] [some opine to take 6th planet from AmK in Varachakra to find this. Another interpretation is to mix this with the previous shloka to make – if AmK is in malefic sign in 12th from AK one indulges in worshipping demigods] In my humble opinion, it is an exceptional sutra which indicates that when there is no planet in 12th from AK look at 6th from AmK to find deity. If there again none is placed then see aspect on 12th from AK if none then aspects on 12th from AmK – we used Aspects on 2nd place only because sage doesn’t advocate using aspects or said anything like if this planet is aspected by this planet one worships this.

Trines

Take 5th mainly as it is not used till now [in previous sutras] but don’t ignore 9th [take it under consideration too]

Two Malefics – Gives one knowledge of Mantra

Aspected by Malefics [these two malefic if aspected by more malefics] – He catches ghosts and supernatural entities [Makes one like Tantrika]

Aspected by Benefics – one uses it for the welfare of others [here person is like a good person knowledgeable of Mantra Shastra who makes use of it for other welfare like giving it to people to alleviate their suffering, pacifying planets etc – this can also be taken as yoga for astrology in my humble opinion]

4th or 5th

Mars and Rahu – Tuberculosis

Only Mars – Boils and Pimples

Only Ketu – Water-related diseases/dysentery/diarrhoea

Rahu and Gulika – Problems due to a low dose of poison [bite of small animals like rats, dogs – which doesn’t give instant death]

[In 4th house these can be serious and life-threatening while in 5th house it can save one after suffering – due to 4th being the house of health and well being (karaka Moon)]

5th or Lagna

Moon and Jupiter – Writer

Moon and Venus – Writer of small grade [First can be research writer while another one can be a fiction writer or the first one can be acclaimed while another one not but noted]

Moon and Mercury – Writer [of low order then above two – can also mean only translator or not well known/acclaimed]

Only Venus – makes one adept in poetry, oratory, well versed in poetry

Only Jupiter – intellectual/writer but not orator/well adept in Grammarian and Vedanta [True sense of knowledge]

Saturn – Shy speaking in front of people

Mercury – Adept at meemamsa [Meemamsa means interpretation – that means a good understanding of all subjects that he can even teach/explain]

Mars – Naiyayika [One well adept in judiciary/good knowledge of decision-taking- nowadays can mean leader/manager]

Moon – Adept at Sankhya Yoga [good knowledge of bodily movements – can mean a physician] Knowledge of literature [intellectual] Singer

Sun – Knowledge of Vedanta [Right and real way of doing things] Singer

Ketu – Knowledge of mathematics [Astrology]

Any of them aspected by Jupiter – makes one expert in that [note Jupiter influence on Sun in 10th and in 9th when malefic are in 3rd and 6th – This shows Jupiter giver expertise in the area – Makes on Siddha. Some also take the same effect if the planet happens to be in Sign of Jupiter]

Judge the same effect from 2nd house of Swamsa and as per some people’s opinion also from 3rd. In my humble opinion Judging the same effects from the 2nd house too is only for planets giving their skills and not for yogas of authorship. These results should only be judged from 3rd only when there are planets in 6th because we have seen before only malefics in 3rd makes one courageous whereas when also in 6th it gives them a profession [of agriculture] thus these professions giving skills should only be judged from 3rd when there are malefic planets in 6th too.

2nd House

Ketu aspected by malefics – makes one stammer in his speech [or other likely speech defects like unable to speak clearly]

Same house of Swamsa

Next yogas are mentioned by sage Jaimini after usage of the word “तत्र ” which by KaTaPaYaDi means 2nd house or in Sanskrit means “from the same place”. Because of Vriddha Karika giving the same results from 1st house of Karakamsa I am of the opinion that all these must be judges from the first house itself. [Shlokas of Vriddha Karika will be given in the end] However one can notice jaimini gave profession from this along with mishaps/misfortune. If we even don’t rely on Virddha Karika’s from shloka 1.2.38 [which says Venus and Sun in Swamsa makes one government servant] and from results of Rashis falling in Swamsa [where sage said if Leo is the sign one gets danger from large canines] we can be very much sure that Sage Jaimini is of the opinion to judge the same king of effects from 1st house. Only one shloka 1.2.121 is for Ketu in 2nd which gives results related to voice. Here one may notice that Jaimini is cryptic in nature but he himself has given hints to decode his words.

 Sun – Government Servant

Moon and/or Venus – Voluptuous, Intellectual [Profession]

Mars – Livelihood from fire [fireman/chef etc.]  holds weapon [Police/Army] Knowledge of chemistry

Mercury – Businessman/ Textile [Anything related to clothing] Sculptor/well mannered [profession that demand mannerism – journalist]

Jupiter – Firm (निष्ठ )in his karmas (कर्म) [undertakings/livelihood] and knowledge (ज्ञान)[intellectual profession is again indicated – first it was indicated with Moon and Venus (the moon was mainly there as a profession of Venus is in next Shloka). The firm may mean some managerial position

Venus – Governmental employee, Sexual, Lives long [100 years age is written that can mean will live long and remain healthy – will nullify yogas of disease]

Saturn – प्रसिद्ध कर्मजीवः in my humble opinion means lives by famous profession [Saturn being karaka of old age and lineage gives profession which family (Father/Grandfather) practises from generations]

Rahu – One who operates bow and arrow [Weapons were also indicated in Mars where he shows big-shots like policeman Rahu shows carpenter/security guard/mechanic] Thief, Dacoit, knowledge about poison [chemist or Ayurvedic/Homeopathic doctors] One who carries Iron machines [Gun/Screwdriver or makes them]

Ketu – Deals in elephant [Big heavy vehicle can be understood – Truck Driver, Car Salesman] Thief

* Shlokas of Vriddha Karika giving same effects from Swamsa Lagna

Sun and Rahu [Situated] – Death by snakebite

The aspect of benefic [on above Yoga] – Snake will bite but it won’t result in death

The aspect of only Benefic [in above yoga] – one is a doctor of poison. [it can mean doctors who deal with rabies patients or like]

The aspect of Mars [In above yoga] – One’s house will be burnt

The aspect of Venus [in above yoga] – Home will not burn [this is a shloka stating nullification of/exception of the previous shloka]

The aspect of Jupiter [in above yoga] – Surrounding houses will burn but he will remain safe.

This is a bit complex. Sun is the significator for heat and Rahu for poison. If they both conjoin this also makes something like [Grahana] now planets in swamsa Rashi [whatever you take it to be -Dasa Rashi/Atmakaraka Navamsa/Lagnesh Navamsa] Yogas in lagna [and aspected by Moon are sure to happen] now with aspect there will be some modifications. Now when the martian aspect comes it increases chances of fire [whose Mars is also a significator] if Venus then being a friend of Rahu [won’t give fire hazards and being benefic will save or decide profession] Jupiter will also give effects like Venus [Save from poison or give profession] he is enemy of Rahu and friend of Sun but even won’t let him fire a house [being benefic] On a careful study one finds Jaimini uses something like Karaka enhancement [Moon in 4th destroys home and gives one disease with an aspect of Ma/Ve/Ke. and we see Sun with the aspect of Mars enhances fire and being with malefic fire one’s house] – Cryptic things are understood slowly and patiently.

Gulika in Swamsa – Uses poison or death by poison

Gulika in swamsa aspected by the moon – Either his wealth is destroyed by thieves or he himself is a thief.

Only Mercury aspects Gulika – One will have elongated penis/testicles [sexual organs]

*There is Gulika [Saturn’s part in hora] and Gulika Lagna [same but calculated with some additions] which one sage is referring to – we will see this in the coming articles [which will critically examine and see these yogas of Jaimini working on charts – as this is the best way of learning something so cryptic like Jaimini Sutras]

Ketu aspected by malefics – Ear disease or loss of ear [in some accident]

Aspected by Venus – One will be initiated [Perform religious rites – Please refer to Arudha bhava and see Vaitanika Yoga. Can also lead to Sanyasa]

Aspected by Mercury and Saturn – Impotent

Aspected by Mercury and Venus – Born of दासी or पुनर्भु [ पुनर्भु means one having a relationship with many men (illicit child) दासी means working mother and can mean single mother – One can note the excellence of Jaimini here]

Aspected by Saturn [and any other planet (Due to next shloka) in my humble opinion Venusian aspect makes this possible (refer to an aspect of Venus over Ketu 3rd paragraph above] – One will indulge in penance or will be भृत्य working for someone else [Tapasvi means indulged in hard work (tiring) and can show someone to be of labour class]

Aspected by only Saturn – one is fake ascetic

Sexuality and Swamsa

The word तत्र  numerically (KaTaPaYaDi) means two and in Sanskrit means ‘as per the preceding stanza’ The word Tatra was used by sage several times in Jaimini Sutras in this chapter it was first used while giving effects of Taurus Here it meant 2 (By KaTaPaYaDi) but it was for Rashi not for Bhava. [in Next Arudha chapter Tatra is used for Bhava] However in this chapter again Tatra was used while giving effects of Sun as the giver of Government official [there Virddha Karika takes it to its Sanskrit meaning] Again it comes when sage says Sun and Venus aspecting/conjoining in Swamsa lagna it makes one Government Servant. Again the same word is used in 1.2.99 [its use there is also controversial and scholars have taken it in both it’s meaning] But there is a very important Shloka in the end भाग्ये केतौ पापदृष्टे स्तब्धवाक्  1.2.118 which means when Ketu is in 2nd house aspected by malefics one voice will be hindered [स्तब्ध means motionless] here one can see sage used the word भाग्ये to indicate 2nd house and not तत्र. Coming to very core basics we get to know that 2nd is a Death inflicting house [Maraka] and deals with food, sustenance, family, face etc whereas 9th house is Father, Guru, Dharma, Luck and Auspiciousness. A person has many Dharmas [to hold] and the main between them is Dharma towards parents, Children, Spouse. Having an extramarital relationship is breaking marital dharma thus in my humble opinion the word तत्र  here must be taken in its Sanskrit meaning. One can argue that 2nd being 8th from 7th shows the end of the marriage. but extramarital is not always the end of marriage as one can have a secret affair or most people have extra-marital before marriage. and 8th house is मङ्गल्य स्थान  [thus break in marriage must be seen from 8th house first – if in case extra-marital yoga breaks marriage] also Vriddha Karika supports 9th house [as an interpretation of तत्र  see above Vriddha Karika Shlokas]

Vargas of Venus or Mars in 9th – भृगव अङ्गारक वर्गे is the word used which means Vargas of Venus or Mars if be in 9th one is परस्त्रीरत [रति is a Sanskrit word for Copulation] पर [means another’s] and स्त्री [wife/spouse] Remember this is not yoga for multiple marriages. It is just for extramarital affairs.

At the end of chapter 1.1 sage says होरदयः सिद्धः all the rules of Hora are सिद्ध that means Proven, Perfect, Proved, Finished, Determinative. Here sage makes two things very clear all the 16 Vargas of Vedic astrology is proven [We will write a separate article on Ancient Vargas] and only Ancient Varga calculations must be used [known as Pravritti-Traya] and all of them can be used. [Means Swa Amsa mainly means Navamsa of Swa Karaka but can also be applied and extended to other divisions. But the yoga must be present in Navamsa first then for fine detailing one can go in other Vargas. Like In a chart with me 4th from Swakaraka is Moon Venus and Sun in Pisces Native being born in a very humble background born in Bihar (in a small district had a painful married life. gave birth to her son when she was 19 and then abandoned by her Husband came to Delhi and now in her 39th year owns a flat in a posh area in Delhi. and have a burning desire to own a  villa. being from a farmer’s family she loves gardening thus it is quite easy to forecast natives will own a villa and will have a garden there (see effects of  Sun in 4th gives house made of grass that shows a small hut in modern sense which can mean a flat. and her ambition for the villa will be fulfilled in the right dasa-antardasa. however, in her D16 4th from Swakaraka is Exalted Sun (Being Sun he gave a flat and exalted will surely show his results in right dasa-antardasa)

A simple interpretation is if Taurus, Libra, Scorpio, Aries be 9th from Swakaraka one will have some extramarital relationships [usually these are relationships before marriage that gives physical encounter] Navamsa itself is a Varga. But if it repeats in many Vargas then one will have many encounters [of extra-marital relationships] See chart of Marilyn Monroe [Her Swakaraka – Lord of Lagna is Moon] who is in Virgo Drekkana [9H-Taurus] Leo Navamsa [9H-Aries] Virgo Vimsamsa [9H – Taurus] Virgo D40, Nina Hartley Swakaraka [Venus – Libra Lagna] Aquarius Navamsa [Aspected by Venus] Pisces D2, Pisces D3, Pisces D7, Aquarius D12, Pisces D24, Leo D40, Pisces D45 real name Marie Louise Hartman she was American adult film actress, adult film director.

aspected by Venus or Mars [Conjunction also] above effect for a lifetime. This means if only Rashi be there the person will have it for some time and then will leave but if Mars or Venus aspect or sits in 9th then one continues this practice for a lifetime. One can notice here Mars will be malefic in 9th [Falling one’s dharma] and Venus is the enemy of Deva Guru Brihaspati giving one a Demonical Dharma [Of enjoyment in life].

Ketu Aspect – Extramarital relationships are restricted [It can mean either it is known by one’s spouse or someone else who can put it to an end] or the person itself after some time puts an end to it.

Jupiter aspect – Have a desire for women [Some have taken that one is engaged in one’s own wife – In my humble opinion it is completely normal and this must not be mentioned by sage. However, this can mean having a desire for other women. His desire won’t get fructified until the 9th house if a sign of Venus or Mars or Aspected by Venus or Mars. But Jupiterian aspect can make one over sexual]

Rahu’s aspect – One loses his money on women [This is a yoga for visiting brothels and other places like that]

4th or/and 5th house of Swamsa

The word तत्र is used again and earlier Shlokas were dealing with 4th or 5th house. Thus these should again be seen from planets in the 4th or 5th house from Swamsa

Saturn – Archer [Physical work]

Ketu – One who make watches [Fine detailing work]

Mercury – High level of ascetic/member of religious order [Not in work]

Rahu – Works with iron machines

Sun – Carries Sword

Mars – Carries spear

The chapter ends with an Exposition of Kemadruma Yoga

Kemadruma Yoga

When there is an equal number of malefics in the 2nd and 8th house [Both] from Lagna, Swamsa and Arudha Lagna one is poor. If Moon aspect this one is especially poor [Without moon’s aspect one is of the middle class and with Moon’s aspect one is down to rags- Predict this in accordance with one’s parents financial condition at birth]

Dasa judgement rules

Sage then 1.2.124 says “all these above-mentioned results must be judged in Dasa too”

For judgement in Sign dasa, all rules of Arudha Chapter 1.3 must be seen from Dasa Rashi and all rules of Swamsa Chapter 1.2 Must be seen from Lord of Dasa Rashi in Navamsa.

What is Swamsa

Different scholars have interpreted it differently [most of them take this as Atmakaraka’s Navamsa Position] But in my humble opinion, Swa means self and Karaka is the significator. Hence generally Swakaraka is Lagnesh and Swamsa is his position in Navamsa [and other Vargas] for all of the chapters whereas for Devotion and Deity from Swamsa one must take Atmakaraka’s Navamsa position. As dasa is temporary Lagna these effects must be judged from Dasa Lord also [as mentioned above]

Extra Shlokas

तत्र  मन्द सर्पयोस्तांबूल दायी – If Saturn and Rahu are in Swamsa [We take तत्र  as Swamsa lagna – however for consumption take तत्र  to mean 2nd house from Swamsa] one is seller or consumer of beetle leaves. [In a broader sense it can mean things of eenjoyment]

चापे चन्द्रे नाविकः – The moon in 4th from Swamsa produces a sailor [It is a double meaning shloka which Validates this as a profession yoga hinting at the validity of judging profession from Swamsa’s 4th house (see above yogas of Rahu in 4th produces person working with iron objects/machines) and also as Boat/Ships are moving indicates at one residence being frequently changed as one lives in a rented house (see effects of Moon in 4th from Swamsa in residence section)]

शुक्रे दृष्टौ विशेषेन – The aspect of Venus over Moon in 4th produces one a sailor for sure [as a profession it is clear as both of them are watery planets. For residence, one must keep in mind that when both of them aspect or are together in 4th from Swamsa they give the palatial house. whereas only Moon in 4th from Swamsa aspected by Venus shows one living in a rented house and changing it always]

Confusion and difficulties

Now we have many yogas for the profession to be seen in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th from Swamsa. How is one decide actual profession between them is a difficult task [other yogas are clear] for that I will write a series of articles on this chapter of Jaimini Sutras to explain the applicability of Yogas and there we will see elimination and synchronization of Yoga’s given in this chapter.
