The basic difference between the Arudha of other houses and the Arudha lagna is For the arudha lagna few things need to be considered that is 1. Stronger between Lagna and its Sanmukha Rashi. 2. Stronger between Arudha of Lagna or Lagnesh. To know what I am talking about please refer to the article mentioned above.
Jaimini Sutram Adhyaya -1 Pada 3
1.3.1 – अथ पदम – Now we will talk about Pada. [From the word Upapada we get to know that Pada is of all houses whereas from the word Lagna Arudha, we get to know that Arudha is only of lagna]
1.3.2 – व्ययेसग्रहे गृहदृष्टे श्रीमन्तः – व्यये is 11 as per KaTaPaYaDi and श्रीमन्त means wealthy. [श्री is the name of the Goddess लक्ष्मी who is said to give blessings. as biggest blessing in Kaliyuga is the money it is taken to mean money but actually, it denotes all auspicious and benevolent things in life] Planets aspecting 11th house from AL gives money [See here the main emphasis is on aspect and not on placement. Placement will also give money but the aspect is considered powerful. Because aspecting planet can have argala which will enhance and strengthen the prospects of the house under consideration. But as the Shloka includes व्ययेस and ग्रहे situated planets in 11th from Arudha also have a strong say. Final results must be declared by assessing both]
See Vriddha Karika : आरूढाल्लाभभवनं ग्रहः पश्येतु न व्ययम्! यस्य जन्मनि सोअपि स्यात् प्रबलो धनवानपि! दृष्टभहाणां बाहुल्ये तदा द्रष्टरि तुङ्गगे! सार्गले चापि बह्वगर्लसमागमे! शुभग्रहागर्ले तन्न तन्नाप्युच्चग्रहागर्ले! सुखानि स्वामिना दृष्टे लग्नभाग्याधिपेन वा! जातस्म पुंसः प्राबल्यं निर्दिशेदुत्तरोतरम! – If a planet aspect 11th from Arudha Lagna but not 12th from Arudha Lagna then one is wealthy. If many planets aspect 11th from Arudha Lagna then the person is even richer. If aspecting planets are exalted then even more riches are to be acquired. If the aspecting planet has argala one is even more wealthy. [See Argala is being seen for aspecting planet] If aspecting planet has more than one Argala then the person is even richer [There are 5 Argala Houses]. If that Argala is of Benefic then one is even richer. If that argala is of exalted planets then even more riches are to be acquired. All these more and more riches yoga only comes to fructify when no planet aspects 12th from Arudha Lagna.
1.3.3 – शुभै न्याय्यो लाभः – Benefics give earning by honest means
1.3.4 – पापैरमार्गेण – Malefic give earning by their sources [पाप here means unlawful sources – This can mean a lot of things from bribe to many things which nowadays are considered good but from Karma’s viewpoint it is a foul means of money]
1.3.5 – उच्चादिभिविशेषात – उच्च [Exlated] आदि [etc] विशेषात [Speical] – If those planets in 11th from Arudha Lagna or aspecting 11th from Lagna be in their Exaltation or other conditions like this [Mool-Trikona, Own House] then they give special gains [High amount or gains/income]
1.3.6 – नीचे ग्रह दृगयोगात व्ययाधिक्यम – [नीचे – 12th by KaTaPaYaDi] If planets aspect 12th house from Arudha or in 12th house from Arudha Lagna it shows [व्यय expenditure आधिक्यम increase] Means planet in 12th from Arudha or aspecting 12th from Arudha shows an increase in expenditure.
1.3.7 – रवि राहु शुक्रै नृपात – Sun Rahu Venus [and/or] Gives expenditure from Government [They can be placed together or any of them can be placed or they can aspect] [expenditure from government means one money being spent due to taxes, and other likely things. Because they are malefics it can indicate money collected by cheating someone and undertaken by the government. While Venus shows one’s hard-earned money being lost]
1.3.8 – चन्द्रदृष्टौ निश्चयेन – If moon aspects [or sits with them] then it will happen for sure [Now from Kemadruma shloka on the last chapter and this one. One can easily guess that moon gives surety to yogas]
1.3.9 – बुधेन ज्ञातिभ्यो विवादाद्वा – [ज्ञाति means relative and विवाद means fight] Hence Mercury in/aspecting 12th from Arudha lagna gives expenditure due to one’s relatives or litigations, court cases, fights [settlement money]
1.3.10 – गुरुणा कर्ममूलात – [Some wrote as करमूलात] Neelkanth interpret this as one’s money is lost in paying taxes [Then what consist of loss from the government given in 1.3.7] In my humble opinion it means expenditure by self [Charity, Donation] [कर्म means one’s Undertakings/What one does and कर also means Hands along with Taxes]
1.3.11 – कुजशनिभ्यां भ्रातृमूलात – Saturn and/or Mars gives expenditure due to brothers.
1.3.12 – एतैः व्यय एवं लाभः – As the expenditure is gaining [The source of the expenditure given by planets in 12th from Arudha lagna turns to be the source of income in 11th from Arudha Lagna]
1.3.13 – लाभे राहु केतुभ्यां उदररोगः – [लाभे – 7 KaTaPaYaDi) If Rahu or Ketu be in 7th from Arudha Lagna [If Arudha Lagna falls in Nodal Axis] one will have diseases of the stomach
1.3.14 – तत्र केतुना झटिति ज्यानि लिङ्गानि – [तत्र Here must be taken as 2nd because if we take ‘As per the preceding stanza’ Sutra in itself will become contradictory as a sage by naming ” राहु केतुभ्यां” Included both of them in the last Shloka] If Ketu be in 2nd house from Arudha Lagna indicate prematurely greying air [Signs of old age] or enlargement of the penis [Sexual disease/hydrocele]
1.3.15 – चन्द्रगुरुशुक्रेषु श्रीमन्तः – If Moon, Jupiter and/or Venus be in 2nd from Arudha Lagna one will be Blessed [Every comfort in life/wealth]
1.3.16 – उच्चेन वा – Exalted planets also give same results [of Being श्रीमन्तः in 2nd from Arudha Lagna. Blessed in life, Rich] Note here it is only उच्चेन वा [Exalted] whereas in the 11th and 12th houses it was उच्च आदि [Exalted etc]
1.3.17 – स्वान्शवदन्यत् प्रायेन – The Yogas of Karakamsa Chapter can also be applied to Arudha Lagna in the absence of Mutual contradiction [Note – this is not vice-versa] [Before this was general effects that can be mixed. After this will start Raajyoga’s]
1.3.18 – लाभ पदे केन्द्रे त्रिकोणे वा श्रीमन्तः – [लाभ -7] If Pada of 7th house be in Trine or Kendra to Arudha lagna one will be Blessed
1.3.19 – अन्यथा दुस्थे – If not [If above condition don’t apply – Pada of 7th house be in other houses than Trine and Quadrants from Arudha Lagna one leads a miserable life/Life of struggles]
1.3.20 – केन्द्र त्रिकोणोपचयेषु द्वयोमैत्री – If Pada of 7th house is in Kendra, Kona or Upachaya houses [Other than 6th because 6th will be mentioned in next shloka] then there will be friendship between a couple [Harmonious and good relationship] [Although this is yoga to be checked in one’s chart to know their marital life in my humble opinion it can also be used as a matchmaking tool] [Note an exceptional and minute point here. pada of the 7th house and Arudha lagna in mutual 4-5-7-9-10 houses give both blessings and an amicable relationship between the couple but Saptama Pada and Arudha Lagna in 3-11 houses only give an amicable relationship between the couple and not blessings – Here couple may need to struggle from some hardships of life. whereas when Saptama Pada is in 6-8-12 from Lagna Arudha there will be no amicability between the couple and they need to work very hard to rise in life and have blessings]
1.3.21 – रिपुरोगचिन्तासु वैरम – [रिपु – 12, रोग – 8 चिन्ता – 6 वैरम् – Enemity] If Saptama Pada and Lagna Arudha be in 6-8-12 Houses from each other then there will be enmity between Couple [Can also be used in matchmaking in my humble opinion]
1.3.22 – पत्नीलाभयोः दृष्ट्या निराभासागर्लया – [पत्नी – 1, लाभ -7] if any planet aspects Arudha Lagna or it’s 7th house or both and he is having an unobstructed argala one will have Bhagya Yoga [Yoga for good luck/fortune] Unobstructed Argala is must if the argala is obstructed it is of no use. a Planet can have 5 Argala placed one between them [3rd] can’t be obstructed if it gives Argala [by the placement of more than one malefics] Hence it says [in my humble opinion] if a planet aspects 7th house of Arudha lagna or Arudha lagna itself and it have unobstructed Argala then one will have good fortune it all 4 houses [5 can’t have] have unobstructed argala then he is even more fortunate. If there are two planets one aspecting Arudha lagna and another 7th from Arudha Lagna and both have Unobstructed Argala then it is even greater Fortunate yoga. if Both of them have all 4 houses giving unobstructed Argala it is even greater Rajyoga. if the Same planet aspects Arudha lagna and its 7th house and have unobstructed argala one will have even greater Fortunate yoga. If the same planet aspect Arudha Lagna and its 7th house and has all 4 Argala from him unobstructed then one will be even more fortunate.
See Virddha Karika’s Shloka – यस्य पापः शुभोवापि ग्रहस्तिष्ठेछुमागर्ले! तेन दृष्टेक्षितं लग्नं प्राबल्यायोपकल्पते! यदि पश्येदग्रहस्तन्न विपरीतागर्ले स्थितः! Anyone having unobstructed argala of either benefics or malefics [Anyone can make Argala condition is it must be unobstructed] and that planet if aspects Arudha Lagna [Remember Virddha Karika too takes Argala only on aspecting planets] one will have strong fortunate yoga. If that Argala [On aspecting planet is obstructed] then this result [of fortune] won’t happen
1.3.23 – शुभार्गले धनसमृद्धिः – If the above argala [explained in 1.3.22] is only made by benefic planets then it gives money [whereas if it is made of both malefic and benefic planets it gives luck – Luck may include wealth too but this yoga is special for giving much wealth]
In the Horoscope of Steve jobs, Taurus is Arudha Lagna. 2nd to Arudha Lagna is Jupiter a great benefic that gives him great wealth and makes him a wealthy person. 11th from Arudha Lagna is Moon which indicates he earned through sales (I remember in one interview his friend mentioned that Steve Jobs mentioned him, I don’t know much of software and hardware of what the company deals with, if I cannot do sales, the company won’t need me) as Steve Jobs have been one of the greatest salesman the world have seen, this power is given by Moon in 11th from Arudha which indicates he will earn because of mind (influencing the mind of people), imagination.
in the Chart of Donald Trump, Arudha lagna is in Virgo which along with its 7th house is aspected by Mercury [same planet aspecting Arudha Lagna and its 7th house making it more powerful – we said this in earlier shloka] Mercury again has Parakram Argala of Mars [Rich people have their own Parakram is a known fact as in Kaliyuga of struggles and competitions none can rise great heights without Parakrama] 4th from Mercury is Jupiter [a benefic] in unobstructed argala [In both the cases 4th house have Argala – when we will deal with Samgyana Chapter of Jaimini Sutras we will get to know when sage explained Arudha he said 4-2-11 houses make argala. This is an important pointer here as first he mentions the 4th house – Indicating the 4th house is the strongest Argala] it is a noteworthy fact that the 2nd house Argala is obstructed hence I am not considering that.
1.3.24 – जन्मकालघटिकास्वेक दृष्टासु राजानः – If Janma Lagna, Ghatika Lagna and Hora lagna are aspected by one planet it makes one king [constitutes Raajyoga] [There are varied opinions in the calculation of Hora Lagna. Whereas the Calculations of Ghatika Lagna are the same everywhere. We will deal with their calculation in another article]
From these, not only one but many Raajyogas can be seen. See Vriddha Karika – विलग्नघटिकालग्नहोरालग्नानि पश्यति! उच्चग्रहे राजयोगो लग्नद्वयमथापि वा! राशेद्रॆकाणतोअशाच्च राशेरंशादथापि वा! यद्वा राशिद्रिकाणाभ्या लग्नदृष्टा तु योगदः! – If Janma Lagna, Hora Lagna and Ghatika Lagna are aspected by an exalted planet one will have Raajyoga. If any two of them [Janma Lagna, Hora Lagna, Ghatika Lagna] are aspected by an exalted planet one will have Raajyoga [Diminished from the earlier one]. If They are aspected in [Janma Lagna, Hora Lagna, Ghatika Lagna] in Rashi Navamsa and Drekkana by one planet [One will have Raajyoga] if they [Janma Lagna, Hora Lagna, Ghatika Lagna] is aspected by one planet in Rashi and Navamsa or Rashi and Drekkana one will have raajyoga. Expanding the yoga if Any two of them aspected by a single planet in Rashi Navamsa and Drekkana makes another Raajyoga. If any two of them are aspected by a planet in Rashi and Navamsa or Rashi and Drekkana makes another Raajyoga. [One can notice here minimum condition is they being aspected by the same planet (two of them aspected small Raajyoga all three of them make big Raajyoga) and they have to be in Rashi Navamsa or Drekkana or any two of them or only in Rashi (Yoga being present in Rashi is main criteria)] This may look complex but is not and I wish to explain this in more detail in a separate article.
1.3.25 – पत्नी लाभयोश्च राश्यंशक दृगानैर्वा – [पत्नी-1, लाभ-7] aspects can also be in 7th house from [any two of] these Lagna’s [Janma Lagna Hora Lagna Ghatika Lagna] in Rashi Navamsa or Drekkana [Rashi and Navamsa or Rashi and Drekkana – Never leave Rashi while using yogas in divisions] aspected by a planet also makes Raajyoga [ to a lesser extent] or if we translate it with other meaning it means if same planet aspects lagna or 7th house or both in Rashi Navamsa and Drekkana [aspect in all three of them is best. for aspect in two of them Rashi is main criteria – as mentioned above] this interpretation is if we take [पत्नी-1, लाभ-7, राश्य -Rashi, अंशक – Divisional charts, दृगा – aspected] in My humble opinion both interpretations are correct [due to second interpretation of Shloka is a qualifying Sutra for Yogada – Which when having unobstructed Argala creates Raajyoga]
1.3.26 – तेष्वेकस्मिनन्यूने न्यूनम – If any two of them be aspected by the same planet it constitutes Raajyoga to a low extent [Explained earlier in 1.3.24 & 1.3.25]
1.3.27 – एवमंशतो दृगाणतश्च – These can also be seen in Rashi Navamsa and Drekkana [Explained above under 1.3.24 & 1.3.25]
1.3.28 – चन्द्रशुक्रयोमिर्थोदृष्टयोः सिंहस्थयोवी यानवन्त – Moon and Venus aspecting [conjoined] each other [By Rashi Drishti] or in mutual 3-11 position gives one Vehicle [Judge the same in D16 D3 D9 – D3 and D9 is primary in Jaimini whereas concerned divisional chart must also be seen/taken into account]
1.3.29 – कुज शुक्रकेतुषु वैतानिकाः – If Mars Venus and Ketu conjoin or aspect each other or they be in mutual 3-11 places to each other [means two of them to combine while third being in either 11th or 3rd from them] Gives Vaitanika Yoga. In my humble opinion, this is yoga for the person being prominent in society/profession and can also imply that one is religious [upto the mark of religion/pious person in his society]
1.3.30 – स्वभाग्यदारमातृभावसमेषु शुभेषु राजानः – [भाग्य-2, दार-4, मातृ-5, भाव-8, सम-9 स्व-self some interpret this as Atmakaraka (Same is the confusion in Swamsa chapter)] In my humble opinion this means that if 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th and 9th house from Arudha Lagna [The chapter deals with] or from lord of Lagna or from Atmakaraka be occupied by benefics one will have Raajyoga. [Remember sage said in 1.3.26 that any two between them makes Raajyoga means any two houses between them having benefics make the yoga rest more the houses occupied by benefics better the Yoga. also don’t forget 1.3.27 and apply the same in Rashi, Navamsa and Drekkana – It must occur in Rashi and then as support, one can see Navamsa or/and Drekkana]
1.3.31 – कर्मदासयोः पापयोश्च – [कर्म-3. दास-6] 3rd and 6th houses having malefics also produce the same Raajyoga from same points Arudha Lagna, Lagnesha, Atmakaraka in Rashi and Navamsa and/or Drekkana [See here only two houses are mentioned] [One must refer to an article named ‘Mani Praval Raajyoga” written by Shri Shanmukha to know another interpretation of this Raajyogas]
1.3.32 – पितृलाभाधिपाच्चैवम् – [पितृ-1, लाभ-7] Judge the same from the Lagna lord or 7th house lords [which means judge the same from Arudha lagna and lord of Arudha Lagna and lord of 7th house from Arudha Lagna. Judge the same from Lord of Lagna and Lord of the 7th house. and from Atmakaraka and lord of the 7th house from Atmakraka.
1.3.33 – मिश्रे समाः – Mixed planet reduces its strength [Suppose 2nd house is having Venus and Sun now it is one benefic and malefic thus it reduces Raajyoga]
1.3.34 – दरिद्राः विपरीते – If it is opposite it makes one Poor [Here are two meanings this yoga makes one rich. Another is if in place of benefics malefics are in 2-4-5-8-9 Houses and benefics in 3-6 houses it makes one poor – Cancels Raajyoga] Suppose if 2-4 have benefics and 8-9 have malefics it falls under 1.3.33 but if only 2nd have benefic and 8-9 have malefics it falls under 1.3.34
1.3.35 – मातरि गुरौ शुक्रे चन्द्रे वा राजकीयः – [मात – 5] If Jupiter Venus and/or Moon be in 5th house from Arudha Lagna or 5th from 7th house of Arudha Lagna [11th house – Source of income] or they be in 5th house from Lord of Arudha Lagna or Lord of 7th house of Arudha Lagna one is engaged in governmental work [Government officer/Minister] [One must remember it was said Venus Rahu or Sun in 12th from Arudha Lagna gives losses from government and if Moon aspects them it is sure to happen. the same in 11th from Arudha lagna that is 5th from 7th of Arudha lagna gives income source. Jupiter was said to give income/expenditure from their own hands – Looks more favourable for being a government minister but can also give only Government service if other Raajyogas are not present. whereas Venus and Moon seem to be giving government profession]
1.3.36 – कर्मणि दासे वा पापे सेनान्यः – If malefics are in 3rd and/or 6th from Arudha lagna one will join armed forces [police/army/security personnel]
1.3.37 – स्वपितृभ्यां कर्मदासस्थ दृष्ट्या तदिशद्र मातृनाथ दृष्ट्या च धीमन्तः – [कर्म-3 दास-6 मातृ-5 स्व-self/Lord of ascendant पितृ-1] Reckon from Lagnesh or Arudha lagna if any planet aspects them [Lagnesh or Arudha lagna] from 3rd or 6th house or lord of 3rd or 6th house aspect them [Count 3rd and 6th house from their placement] or if the lord of Arudha Lagna be in 3rd or 6th house from Arudha lagna one is Shrimanth. The same will be the result if the 5th lord aspect Lagnesh or Arudha Lagna. [Here from Arudha Lagna house counting needs to be done. But in the case of lagnesh count the same from Lagna and also from the position of Lagnesh] [धी is बुद्धि intelligence शुद्धि purity वृद्धि growth and सिद्धि accomplishment – Thus it means one is intelligent, Pure and accomplished in something and grows in life [rises high] due to this]
1.3.38 – दारेशदृष्ट्या सुखिनः – Aspect of 4th lord [From Lagna or placement of lagnesh or Arudha lagna on Arudha Lagna or Lagnesh] makes one enjoy in life [give many comforts to enjoy]
1.3.39 – रोगेशदृष्ट्या दरिद्राः – Aspect of 8th lord makes one poor [From 1.3.37 to 1.3.40 are all yogas of one set]
1.3.40 – रिपुनाथदृष्ट्या व्यय शीलाः – Aspect of 12th lord makes one spendthrift. [From 1.3.37 to 1.3.40 we get to know aspects have a more significant say thus in 1.3.37 part of 3rd 6th and 5th lord needs to be considered primarily – Jaimini gives a hint here that whichever house lord aspects Lagnesh or Arudha Lagna his qualities becomes prominent in one’s life]
1.3.41 – स्वामिदृष्ट्या प्रबलाः – Aspected by the lord is strong/prominent [It can mean sign aspected by its lord will give its effect prominently this can also be used in Dasa Phala and Bhava Phala. For example, Suppose the 8th lord from Arudha aspects Arudha lagna and the lord of Arudha Lagna also aspects arudha lagna then one will have abstract poverty.
1.3.42 – पश्चाद्रिपुभाग्ययोः ग्रहसाम्ये बन्धः कोणयोः रिपुजाययोः कीटयुग्मयोः दाररिःफयोश्च – If the equal number of planets are in 2-12, 3-11, 4-10, 5-9, 6-8 houses from Lagna or Arudha lagna one gets imprisonment [Bondage is the word which can mean a person is either in Jail or underground or due to some other reasons his movement and activities are restricted. Involvement of malefics will worsen the condition]
1.3.43 – एवमृक्षाणां तदीशानां च शुभ संबन्धो निरोध मात्र पाप संबन्धात शृङ्खला प्रहारादयः – If only benefics are in this [equal number of planets in these houses pair] only restrictions will be there. whereas if only malefics are in this [equal number of planets in certain houses] Yoga then one will be attacked [Real imprisonment with action/punishment from government or from the person who causes bondage – This yoga can also be applied in charts of Kidnapping etc]
1.3.44 – शुक्रात गौण पदस्थो राहुः सुर्यद्रिष्टो नेत्रहा – One of the most difficult aphorisms. Scholars have given different interpretations for this, Let’s have a look at them
In my personal opinion [शुक्र -3 (Scholars have taken this as one) but श-5 क-1 = 51 अङ्कानां वामनो गतिः 15/12 (12×1=12-15=3)] [गौण 5] [पदस्थो on that Pada] [राहु सूर्य दृष्टो Rahu aspected by Sun or both aspecting that house(pada)] [नेत्रहा blind] It means 1. Find Arudha Lagna [Based on the method described in my article titled “Arudha Lagna”] 2. Go to 3rd from Arudha lagna and then find of 5th house directly or reversely from 3rd of Arudha lagna based on oddity [Male sign direct, female sign reverse – Oddity of Arudha and its 3rd house will be the same] 3. Find the Pada of that house and the resulting Pada is what Sage Jaimini is talking about. 4 If that be aspected by Rahu and/or Sun then one is blind.
1.3.45 – स्वदारगयोशशुक्र चन्द्रयोः आतोधं राज चिन्हानि च – [दार-4] [स्व -self Lagnesh/ Chapter is in context of Arudha lagna so can mean lord of Arudha Lagna or Arudha Lagna itself] Moon or/and Venus conjoining/aspecting 1st or 4th from Lagnesh, Arudha Lagna or lord of Arudha Lagna gives one symbol of kings [Affluent person enjoying power/luxuries]
Note – My approach has been to take a chapter of Jaimini Sutras and then translate it. I have given my own translation based on my limited understanding. That can be wrong. I request learned readers to please forgive me for any mistakes committed [as mere human touch makes things imperfect] and enlighten me with their knowledge.
